The Isles of Scilly…

The Isles of Scilly are an archipelago of some 150 islands and rocks, lying 28 miles south west of Cornwall.

Five are inhabited – St Mary’s the largest, Tresco, St Martin’s, St Agnes and Bryher. Every island is served by an excellent network of inter-island launches that run seven days a week from April through to the end of October. Apart from direct trips between the islands, circular sightseeing tours are also offered giving the opportunity to look at the extensive wildlife. The boat service in the winter is governed more by wind and tide, but daily, direct trips still take place with the occasional circular journey when the weather is sufficiently benign.

One of the big pleasures of Scilly is that you can always find a beach to yourself. There are many varied beautiful beaches on all the Islands from the small secluded coves of St Agnes to the long, curving beaches of St Martins and Tresco, all with fine white sands and lines of lovely coloured shells.

Wherever you choose to walk on Scilly the delights are endless and whether you are fascinated by history, nature or just love the solitude of miles of empty shoreline there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The climate, affected by the Gulf Stream, sets the islands apart from mainland Britain and dictates the landscape that characterises Scilly. The islands are home to a tremendous variety of rare plant and flower species, many not seen on the UK mainland. Wildlife flourishes, with many important bird species able to colonise in safety. Add to this mix, the archaeological and historical landmarks, the result of over 4000 years of human settlement and it is easy to see why Scilly has over time, been referred to as the ‘Fortunate Isles’.
